Our Holy Family

Outside Our Doors

For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger and you invited me in; I needed clothes, and you clothed me; I was sick and you looked after me; I was in prison and you came to visit me.
~ Matthew 25:35,36

Serving Our Neighbors

Although Holy Family is a small church, there dwells a generous, empathetic spirit within that always responds to community needs. This spirit embodies biblical principles of feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and addressing the needs of those less fortunate in the Mills River community and beyond.

In keeping with that biblical principle, our Outreach Committee meets with local nonprofit aid organizations to assess their needs. In addition to local needs, we support global and regional relief efforts such as assistance to victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and tornadoes in Clarksville, TN. We also support the work of Episcopal Relief and Development.

In addition to financial contributions, Holy Family regularly conducts need-based collection projects such as, personal care items for the Hendersonville Rescue Mission, snacks for children served at Safelight, and personal care items Christmas gift bags for Meals on Wheels recipients. Once a month, Holy Family fills backpacks with nutritious snacks for the Mills River Elementary students who are at risk of hunger to take home for the weekend. Parishioners regularly support our ongoing commitment to the Interfaith Assistance Ministry (IAM) with donations of hundreds of pounds of non-perishable food to feed our county’s residents.

Holy Family responds enthusiastically to each project, once again reaffirming our commitment to making a difference by being Christ’s presence in the Mills River community.

Meeting Our Neighbors

More and more, you will find our members on the other side of our red front doors, going out into the communities around us to meet our neighbors where they are. Every January, adults and children from Holy Family join the larger community for a day of service to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Hosted by St. James Episcopal Church, volunteers from all walks of life come together to repackage beans and rice for local families impacted by food insecurity. This community service project brings diverse parts of the community together in one setting to work together, get to know each other and bridge disparities and differences within the community. You may also spot us at Mills River Day at North River Farms in early May. Last year, hundreds of people and families stopped by our booth for games, conversation, and an ice pop. Similarly in June, you can find us at the Hendersonville Pride Picnic supporting the LGBTQ+ community and their families and allies. For the Feast of St. Francis in October, Holy Family held a Blessing of the Animals service with Mills River Presbyterian Church on a Sunday afternoon at Bold Rock Cidery. In addition to blessing our pets, we collected pet supplies to give to our local animal shelter.
